The Castle & Its History

Dromoland Castle is one of Ireland’s most storied estates, with roots stretching back nearly a thousand years. It was originally the ancestral home of the O’Brien family, direct descendants of Brian Boru, the High King of Ireland who famously defeated the Vikings at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014. The O’Briens were one of Ireland’s most powerful Gaelic dynasties, ruling much of Munster for centuries. The present castle you see today was built in 1835 by Sir Edward O’Brien, replacing an earlier fortified house on the estate. Designed in a grand Gothic Revival style, it reflected both the family’s status and the shift from medieval stronghold to aristocratic residence. The O’Brien family lived at Dromoland until 1962, when financial pressures led them to sell the estate. It was then transformed into a luxury hotel—one of the first true “castle hotels” in Ireland—helping set the standard for high-end Irish hospitality. Today, Dromoland blends that deep aristocratic history with modern luxury. You’re essentially staying in a place tied directly to Ireland’s royal lineage, with nearly a millennium of heritage behind it—something very few venues in the world can genuinely claim.

Transport

Dromoland Castle is conveniently located just a 15-minute drive from Shannon Airport (SNN), making it the most seamless option for guests traveling internationally. Shannon is served by direct flights from the U.S. via United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Aer Lingus.

Alternatively, Dublin Airport (DUB)—served by all major international airlines—is approximately a 2-hour drive from Dromoland Castle, with a straightforward route across the country.

As the Ryder Cup at Adare Manor begins the day following our wedding celebrations, we highly recommend booking flights and transportation well in advance to ensure the best availability and ease of travel.
